WASHINGTON – The Pentagon will buy and operate one or two commercial imagery satellites and plans to design and build another with more sophisticated spying capabilities, according to government and private industry officials.
The satellites could spy on enemy troop movements, spot construction at suspected nuclear sites and alert commanders to militant training camps.
The Broad Area Space-Based Imagery Collector satellite system, or BASIC, will cost between $2 billion and $4 billion. It would add to the secret constellation of satellites that now circle the Earth, producing still images that are pieced together into one large mosaic.
A single satellite can visit one spot on Earth once or twice every day. BASIC’s additional satellites will allow multiple passes over the same sites, alerting U.S. government users to potential trouble, humanitarian crises or natural disasters like floods.

THEY SHOULD USE THEM FOR SPYING ON HOW MENY PEOPLE ARE WORKING THE WELLFARE SYSTEM(SEE THEM DEALING DRUGS)AND GETTING PAID TO STAY HOME.
THE SATELLITES WILL ALSO BE GOOD FOR CHECKING OUT THE U.S.
AND MEXICO BOARDER.
THE U.S.A. SHOULD TAKE CARE OF DOMESTIC ISSUES FIRST, BECAUSE
THERE IS ALOT OF WATER BETWEEN US AND THEM
NO ONE LIKES NOSY PEOPLE, THAT GOES FOR A COUNTRY TOO.
MOST OF THE PROBLEMS WE HAVE WITH SECURITY IS BECAUSE OF
BEING NOSY.
OTHER COUNTRIES DON’T HAVE SATELLITE SPYING AND THAY DO JUST FINE.
THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE SHOULD BE CALLED THE DEPARTMENT OF OFFENSE.

Listen… many are missing the boat here except Jane Harman. I agree that the us government is overstepping their boundaries when it comes to spying on Americans and invading our privacy. I myself have been tormented due to someone being on my phone to my knowledge since 2004 (6 years) making echoe tones and loud beep tones when talking to family and friends( they heard it too) intercepting my calls by disconnecting them randomly not allowing me to use my phone making my speaker phone phone go on when the handset was in the cradle no one near the phone.They even did this to my daughter when she walked into her home with her husband my husband even witnessed our speaker phone go off and we heard a dial tone in the room dashes and underscores and numbers on my caller id and my daughters who lives out of state. Dashes and underscores even numbers appeared on my caller id and my daughters who lives out of state.This would happen to me when I would take the phone off the hook and turn the spanish channel on the tv leaving the phone off the hook by the tv for whoever was on the other end to listen to. Also someone had called 911 making like someone called from my sisters phone number and no one from the home called this even happenned to my husbands mother. Someone also called me one night I star 69 it said my daughter called but she did not.It aslo did not register on her her cell phone as a outgoing call. you figure this out. My I live in northern Va. and in a mayberry town where the sheriffs do not have much crime to fight and I believe are more than likely moonlighting spying on the public for entertainment with their toys.Do not forget all are one local cops,state and federal police fbi cia military etc are ALL ONE no more divisions here . Lord knows that is all who lives in my community outside the DC area.
So anyone can use this technology for personal gain and no one is policing them. Can this info be sold? Sure it can… Who are the enemies???The enemies can be me and you who are innocent people. My ex son in law has insight as to what is being said in my home and has friends in the police department where I live and friends and family that work in Government. Your phone when on hook can be used for eaves dropping (aka slave device) am not sure if these are obsolete now that we have have satellites. Just look at what is happeneing to innocent people spying on their cellphones knowing every thing they say and their where abouts.These are being used by ex spouses and spoused a long with government.
People make me upset who are not willing to speak up for their freedom that our fore fathers worked so hard for and ensured with the us constitution. Its a wonder I am not in the nut house living in this god forsaken place day and age. : 0 ( I do not take this infringement lightly.
